Tuxedo Sofa

Tuxedo Sofas

Designed to anchor lounge spaces without visually overpowering their surroundings, Tuxedo Sofas are precisely proportioned and exquisitely detailed. They are based on a modular grid that accommodates for designs ranging from a two-seat settee to an expansive corner sectional. The grid also allows for any Tuxedo Sofa to be easily coupled with other pieces in the Tuxedo range, including ottomans, benches and lounge seating.

Cantilevered atop narrow steel legs that are available in a range of six metal finishes, the Tuxedo Sofa cuts a low and sleek profile thanks to the horizontal band formed by the back and (optional) arms. Its lightweight appearance is furthered by the crisply tailored upholstery that covers the slim, dual-density foam cushions. Each piece is available in a full range of upholstery with or without quilting.

Flexible and functional, Tuxedo Sofas can be configured to suit a multitude of spaces, including executive offices, casual conference areas, lobby and reception areas, in addition to living rooms and residential spaces.

Designer

Architect/designer Craig Bassam and brand strategist/creative director Scott Fellows joined forces in 2003 to form BassamFellows. Following successful solo ventures and with a shared vision in mind—to return true craftsmanship and beauty to contemporary living—the duo quickly got noticed.

As Bassam explains, “We wanted to mix the timelessness and attention to detail of modern classics with contemporary design and blend it with honest materials, solid construction, beauty, and utility.” Fellows adds, “It’s all about merging the rationality and clarity of modernism with the warmth and texture of nature.” Perhaps it’s what each brought to the partnership that makes their output so unique. Both had lived and worked in Europe, where they were influenced by the use of fine leather and wood.

Raised in New York and armed with a Harvard MBA, Fellows honed his branding skills working with international powerhouses including Corning Housewares, Bally, and Ferragamo. Bassam, who grew up in Sydney, was such a devotee of modernism that he moved to New Canaan, Connecticut, where many of mid-century architecture’s greats had lived and practiced. He began his own design studio there in 1997.

Over the years, the well-balanced design aesthetic of BassamFellows has resulted in such iconic pieces as the Tractor Stool, about which The New York Times said: “Couldn’t be more comfortable if it were custom-made.” When designing the Tuxedo Component Lounge Group, Bassam says, “We pared back all the unnecessary bulk and expressed the structure in an elegant way. We wanted it to ‘float’ off the floor.”

From 2010 to 2013, BassamFellows were creative directors for the Specialty and Consumer Businesses of Herman Miller, which include Geiger and the Herman Miller Collection. In the years since, they’ve continued to design products for both Herman Miller and Geiger, including clean and casual Wood Base Lounge Furniture and glass-topped Layer Tables.
